Grant

biography

My name is Elias Grant Roach, and I have been a lover of music since as long as I can remember.  If I had a ten dollar bill for every song i've written, I'd likley be right up there with Bill Gates as the world's richest man.  My musical inspiration's vary so greatly I'd probobly have no fingers left if I sat here and typed them all, but my greatest influence on the aproach and style I have toward music comes from my grandfather, ol' paps, who gave me my first guitar and tought me the a-g chord scale.  I've played guitar and sang in a great many number of hard rock bands, but recently I've been completley epiphanised musicly by the new wave of hawain-folk music, and i'm going it alone for now.  I'm a folk singer-songwriter under the name of Grant, (my middle name), and i look forward to talking about music and posting my lyrics here.

On and On (not the Jack Johnson song)

January 14th, 2007 + 7:01 PM  ·  Grant

Old lovers are one of the most constant inspirations of mine, among many other things, especially the recent ones that fucked you over.  Songs like this aren't the most complex things I've ever written, but their still fun as shit to play!

V1
She's slippin' in and out of my mind
She's keepin' everyone in check
She'd sell her namesake for the right kind
She's the devil breathin' down your neck

I'll close my eyes while you undress so calmly
I'll try to keep my mind on somthin' else
But you know it's hard not to make you feel so lonely
The longest bridge couldn't keep you from yourself

Chorus
So I sit here longin' for a sunrise
While the moon is drawin' nigh
But I'm only looking through my good eye
So I'm only seein' half the prize
And all that treasure on the east-side
That I'll never ever look upon
All that beggin' for a free ride
Oh, the beggin' goes on and-
On and on and on and on, (2x)
On and on and on and on it goes

(guitar interlude)

V2
She's creepin' there under the stage light
She loves it when her strings are pulled
See her sittin', readin' by the lamplight
But you know she's still nobody's fool

So in and out and up upon the rooftops
Is where the woman again became a girl
Done with surfers, football, booze and tube-tops
Her inner-outsides again start to unfurl
[repeat chorus]

Bridge
Set "if" forward, and set it free, set a place for you and me
At the table of the past, with all the Tonto's that kiss her ass
Set "if" forward, and set it free, save a ride for do re mi
Easy as pie is a piece of cake, but it's shitty bakin' and it's done been ate

Chorus
So I'll sit here beggin' for a sunrise
While your moon is passin' by
But I'm finnaly usin' all my eyesight
So I'll be damned if I'm left behind
Cause now I can finnaly taste the rainbow
In black and violet, pink and blue
Findin' god was just a scapegoat
That led me in and out (of you)
And on and on and on and on (2x)
On and on and on and on it goes, it goes, it's goin, goin, gone

Everybody's Alright

January 13th, 2007 + 11:01 AM  ·  Grant

This song's kind of long

V1
Walkin'
Like I just found love for the first time
And I want all the people
Starin'
Like they just found god, 'cause I have
And dammit don't it feel so
Good to see what I believe, is the wrong way
But all my friends are pagans
So they
Won't bother me, 'cause I know
That all they do is waste their time, all they do is waste their time
All they do is waste their time, and mine but I feel fine
You know I'm bound and you know I'm right, I say

"I didn't know"
Said the boy with the gun
"My friends said it was needed so it needed to be done
But love had killed hime 'fore his hate had begun
And you can't blame me
'Cause papa says I'm too young, papa says I'm too young
Papa says I'm too young to know my wrong from right
Leave me hear and you know I might say"

Chorus
Everybody's gonna be alright,
Now there ain't no stars,
But look at that sky
The lights that fly, fly up so high
We stay when we say it, 'cause what we said has gotta be right

V2
Karma, karma, karma's dead
So we won't have to speak
If we forget what was said
'Cause guys like us
Don't need to ask
If we bullshit our way
Then we won't have a fight on our hands, won't have a fight on our hands,
Won't have a fight on our hands, and you can keep your plans
The past is good and the future's lookin'

Up and out and around it goes
Now where it stops,
Nobody knows

'Cause we go where we want
And we take what we tame
'Till there's nobody left
But those who don't wanna be tamed, those who don't wanna be tamed
Those who don't wanna be tamed and we'll,
Forget their names
The story's good but the things we hear are lame

(Repeat first verse and chorus)

No Home

January 12th, 2007 + 6:01 PM  ·  Grant

V1
Magic gases fill the air
And I am pulled on by my new found airie
And I don't wanna leave this place
But I will choke if I don't find a space where I belong

But maybe on the ground it's non-existant
'Cause in my head it's hard to reach
Such pretty verse will never fully say it
'Cause I am still too dumb to teach

Chorus
But I'm such a long way from home
And I don't wanna be alone
I just wanna be where I can live and be loved, and I-
Never wanna go back home
'Cause I know I'll stay too long
I just wanna be where I can swim forever and not sink

V2
Life and love both feel the bite
But life and love still watch the tides come crashing
Why is he leaving yesterday?
What gives him strength enough to pull his collar up and face the day?

But I will see you all on the other side, dear friends 'cause-
I hear the grass is greener there
And you will meet me the whitest shores but-
How will I know that you'll stay there?

V3
But now the younger days are gone
Nothing more than thoughts to confuse and beguile
So he sits idle on the porch
With his dogs and with an old, man's, stern but hearty smile

And in no book would you ever find such answers
Because the questions are overhead
The worlds will see itself be put on trial
But we'll be sleepin' soft in our beds  [carry "beds"]

Chorus
'Cause he's finnaly found a home
And he'll no longer be alone
He's comin' down and he will live, and, be loved but he'll
Never try t go back home
'Cause you know he'll stay too long
He can finnaly sleep in peace and swim, forever but not sink

(guitar solo, fade out)

Eyes on the Prize

January 12th, 2007 + 5:01 PM  ·  Grant

I wrote this song about a month ago.  Though what it's about has no real bearing on me anymore, I still think It's a good song and like to play it often.  I'm kind of at a dead-end now as far as recording goes, and I can't post any songs as of now.  But hopefully I can soon. Enjoy!

V1
As she falls away
With not a word to say
Only silence meets my eyes
But in that gaze I find
A wall to hide behind
Where pools of thought are doomed to die

And how she swims with grace
Upon that awful place
Where the smoke is black with time
And she's found nothin' else
Just walls of empty shelves
Where her heart did once reside

Chorus
But now she's tucked into her bed
With silly thoughts to fill her head
And in the morning she'll be clearer than the diamonds in her eyes
She's got her eyes on the prize

V2
The storms-a-comin' in
And I've got a fire to tend
I've not the time for you now
But when the rains have passed
And when the die is cast
I'm sure you'll hear me singin' loud

And on a sunny day
When the storm has washed away
When morning light is at it's peak
I'll tell you every tale
And hammer every nail
And let you rest when you grow weak

Chorus
But now I'm restless in my bed
With many thoughts thrown at my head
And in the mornin' if I wake to see the sun shinin' bright
I'll have my eyes in the prize

V3
So have a drink or two
And please don't look so blue
Put your feet up and rest a while
Tell me all you've seen
And everywhere you've been
Every treasure you wish to find

'Cause babe, it sure was fun
But now the time has come
For you to exit center stage
But when the lights go out
And the crowd no longer shouts
I'm sure I'll hear you rock my cage

Chorus
But for now we're safe here in our beds
With merely songs to fill our heads
And in the morning if I wake to see you layin' by my side
Then I'll have finally seized the prize

Family Ties

January 12th, 2007 + 4:01 PM  ·  Grant

Here's another tune i thought i'd post

V1
My mother waters flowers while my father loads his gun
And smokes all of my cigarettes, a wars to be won
Smokes all of my happy-grass while I'm having fun

My sister makes her cocktails while my brother makes her bed
But he'd raise her only child, if the two of them were dead
He'd raise her only child rather than rest his head

Chorus
And for the shoes of every woman and the hat of every
The rooms in which we hide ourselves, the rooms in which we stand
Into the face of every criminal strapped to a chair,
We must stare, we must stare, we must stare

V2
He plays an old guitar made of dreadnought wood
And the sounds that I hear from it, I wish that you would
The sounds that I hear from it, I wish that you could

Hear a melody that takes you so far away
To a time when the innocence was still young at play
A time when the innocence was harder to fake

Chorus
And taste the wine of an elegance that's etched in your mind
And trade your malevolence for a spot on the rind
For the sake of the decadence that's so hard to find,
Let it ride, let it ride, let it ride

V3
So let me smoke another fag or two, 'fore I turn away
Puttin' pavement on the avenue that never paved the way
Pavement on the mouth of love with not a lot to say

'Cause my sister makes her cocktail while my brother makes her bed
And he'd raise her only child if the two of them were dead
Raise her only child while the two are off to bed

Chorus
And for the heart of every man who has ever read a book
Who would give his every penny but not fathom what he took
For the ear of every balladeer who's ever heard me sing
We must ring, we must ring, we must ring

And from the hand of every clergyman to ever hold a gun
We must run, we must run, we must run
